The Role

Following the interruption to learning caused by COVID-19 the Government provided schools and colleges with funding to provide small group catch-up sessions for students who have experienced disruption to their studies.   

At The Sheffield College, Progress Tutors provide face-to-face small group support for 16-19 Study Programme students who have not achieved a grade 5 or above in GCSE English and/or maths, or who are experiencing difficulties relating to the disruption to their vocational studies.

Reporting to the Tuition Fund Project Manager this is an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated and energetic team, supporting students in small group catch-up sessions.

 

Key responsibilities

Work with assigned GCSE English Language or maths classes/vocational areas, making appointments for small group tuition with students outside their programmed study hours. 

Identify the learning needs of students and agree/define appropriate learning objectives.

Identify students in your caseload who are not attending sessions, chase attendance, liaising with a range of academic and support staff where appropriate and necessary.

Keep detailed records of the small group tuition delivery, including attendance, engagement and progress.

Ensure sessions are well planned, focused and are targeting skills gaps.

Contribute to the culture of action research and critical reflection within the wider English and maths teams.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • At least A level or equivalent qualification in English or maths, or educated to degree level (in a related subject), or be able to demonstrate relevant experience and ability.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of one or more of the key subjects, as well as sound understanding of pedagogy concepts. 
  • Skilled in the use of relevant IT packages. 
  • Able to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn
